On the Road Again in a Mororhome

Whether you're driving in a motorhome, car, motorbike or campervan, the Great Dolomites Road is perfectly doable. Hope.
If you're not used to mountain roads, it can seem a little intimidating, but follow the steps below, take your time and enjoy one of our very favourite roads.

These driving directions will go from Bolzano, which is the fashion nosotros drove it. Obviously, you can drive them in reverse. 🙂 The road goes upwards into the mountains and passes through South Tyrol, Trentino and Veneto.
Driving the Great Dolomites Route- things to know before y'all set off
- In that location are several names for the route: SS241; Die Große Dolomitenstraße (High german) and Grande Strada delle Dolomiti OR Strada dei formaggi delle Dolomiti (Italian)
- It's well signposted and there's decent phone betoken around the entire area.

- There is NO guarantee of fuel stations between Bolzano and Canazei – fill up before you kickoff. (They can exist shut)
- There are a couple of restaurants/ cafes/ shops along the route, in modest villages or tourist spots. Only ideally, bring nutrient and drink with you to bask in a beautiful spot (more than on that below!)
- Expect most people to be speaking German. Aye, in Italy. This section is function of the historic Austro-Hungarian empire. Road signs and people will be in German language and Italian, simply the further north you become, the more than German you'll hear. Cortina is Italian once again.
What is the all-time time to drive the Keen Dolomite Route?
- This road is all-time driven in expert weather, then you can bask the views. Cloudy is achievable, but if information technology's raining, you may want to postpone- y'all won't get the same feel. Fog- forget it completely.
- Wait lorries and coaches coming in the opposite direction at all times. If you're nervous, early morning is the all-time time to bulldoze this road.
- Timing is primal! Ideally, avoid loftier season (July/ August). It's too busy and rest stops volition exist full, not to mention increased difficulty driving upward and downwardly steep hills with actress traffic. We visited at the beginning of October and information technology was perfect- trees changing colour, not besides many people, yet warm enough to enjoy a walk.
- The route may shut in winter, especially in times of heavy snowfall. Signs will warn you.

This is the entire Great Dolomites route, from Bolzano to Cortina d'Ampezzo. This route incorporates the Pordoi Laissez passer.

Visiting The Dolomites Pt 1- Driving the Groovy Dolomites Road- Italy in a motorhome bout
Our 1-day Smashing dolomites road trip itinerary in a motorhome
We collection the Not bad Dolomites road all the manner to Canazei. From at that place, yous have a selection- practise the Sella Pass to Ortisei (which is what we drove) or exercise the Pordoi Pass towards Cortina d'Ampezzo.

We chose to drive towards Ortisei considering we wanted to practise the cable machine up to Seceda and visit the Val di Funes, but if you've already seen everything you lot want to in this area than by all means pick the route towards Cortina.
Smashing Dolomites drive (step by step route tour)
We drove upward from Trento, and so we started at the Bolzano. If y'all are heading North (from Trento), it'southward the exit due north of Bolzano- Bolzano Nord/ Eggental exit
- Wait for road SS241- Grande Strada delle Dolomiti (Italian) or Die Große Dolomitenstraße (German)
- Take this route- you will immediately drive into a LONG tunnel, which goes uphill. Do not panic- I promise there will be some views shortly.
- You exit the tunnel, still climbing uphill. You're driving through a gorge, which is beautiful, just there are trees on both sides and then you oasis't got astonishing views however. Wait for information technology.
- All of a sudden, you turn a corner and get your first view of the 'real' Dolomites. Feel free to finish the motorhome/ car/ campervan in a safe place and take photos- but I promise you lot'll get better shots before long.
- Continue following the road and going uphill. The views get better and better
- Arrive at Lake Carezza. This is worth a stop if you can spare thirty minutes.
- There is a cafe here, where you can buy nutrient if you lot need, but our advice is to get information technology to have away (if yous're in a motorhome or camper, fifty-fifty better.) Trust me, the perfect lunch spot is coming up.
- Plough left out of Lake Carezza (assuming that's the way you're going!) and go on climbing. After 15 minutes, you lot'll make it at a flatish section with unbelievable views over the valley and other Dolomite mountains.
- Hither, y'all'll discover LOADS of small-scale parking areas which are perfect for a dejeuner stop. (Notation: You lot Tin can Non wild camp/ free camp/ sleep in the Dolomites national park overnight. Even out of flavor. Sorry.)
- Brace yourself. Things are nigh to get wiggly. It's been adequately sedate in terms of tight hairpin bends so far. But going downhill that all changes.
- Arrive in Canazei. This is where you choose whether to practise the Sella Pass to Ortisei or the Pordoi Pass to Cortina d'Ampezzo. There is no correct/ wrong reply and both are fabled, so pick the one which works best with your Dolomites itinerary and what you desire to see next.
Driving the Dolomites Road tips
- Be KIND TO YOUR BRAKES. Small pulses and take your foot off them as much equally possible. Drive slowly, use your gears and engine braking as much equally possible.
- If in doubt, pull into a safety identify (in that location are lots of laybys on the way down) and rest for five-10 minutes to give the brakes a chance to cool. (Practice NOT put common cold water onto hot brakes- that causes stress fractures)
- If you're in a motorhome, think your length. On many hairpin bends, you lot will need to pull out onto the other side in guild to get around safely. Check for traffic coming the other direction.
- Similarly, if you lot are a car, expect motorhomes/ coaches/ lorries to pull out and stop a decent distance before the bend to let them to swing effectually.
Tin can you bulldoze the Cracking Dolomite road from Venice?
Absolutely! Many people hope to visit the Dolomites on a route trip from Venice and information technology'southward doable in a solar day, although information technology will be a long mean solar day!
Venice to Bolzano is about two hours, 45 minutes and and then you would complete the balance of the Neat Dolomites Route. We suggest taking the Sella Pass to Ortisei route, which will then lead you back the state highway of the A22 and south again, where you tin can enjoy more spectacular gondola rides in Venice.
Wild camping in the Dolomites with a motorhome/ campervan
Sorry, wild or gratuitous camping ground on the Nifty Dolomites road is not immune. The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage site and bluntly, I hold with them not allowing wild camping (although they do allow it upwardly Tre Cime di Lavaredo- which is AMAZING!)
Which might audio crazy, as we Beloved wild camping in our motorhome. There are plenty of park rangers and police and y'all will exist moved on when they find y'all.
Some people accept said it is ok to wild camp outside of peak flavor. I'll be honest, we did see a small campervan parked upwardly Sella Pass and covered in snow (which was odd, as we didn't have snow!)
It looked like it had been at that place for a while… but nosotros don't know if anyone was using information technology or if it belonged to one of the park rangers. That was the only vehicle we saw during our entire Dolomites visit which looked like it was wild camping.
